Reel Adventure Charters 5-9-08 report

Hello everyone. The Wrightsville Beach Fishing and Carolina Beach Fishing is in full swing. I have been pretty busy with fishing, building custom fishing rods, and taking delivery of my new flats boat, and I have gotten behind on my fishing reports. Here is a quick, short report. The next one will have lots more info including video’s!

First, the new flats boat. To keep the report short and sweet I will sum up the new boat in one word….Awesome! Stay tuned for the next report for lots more on the Beavertail.

Now for the fishing:

Inshore: The redfish, speckled trout, flounder and black drum are doing well in the ICW and Cape Fear River. Live bait has been the bait of choice. There are small menhaden in the dredge pond and surrounding areas. Finger mullet should be here soon!

Offshore: The Spanish Mackerel are biting well just off the beach out to 5 miles along with the blues. King Mackerel are biting well around the dredge wreck and schoolhouse. I have been using cigar minnows, but yozuri’s and drone spoons will also work this time of year. The kings are biting throughout the entire water column.

A tip for the season: Soon the season will be in full swing and we will be slammed with boats. The Cape Fear area inshore is a small congested area. Please be respectful to your fellow boater. Just because you have a boat does not give you the god given right to do as you please. Learn your boat and the area you are running and fishing. Some of you that are new to the area would do well by picking up a chart and researching the areas you are fishing and running. This will not only prevent you from ticking people off by running on top of them but will also make you a better fisherman if you study the charts closely. If I can help any new comers or weekend visitors with navigating tips or fishing tips please call me. The tips are free!

Reel Adventure Charters 4-23 report

The Wrightsville Beach fishing and Topsail Island fishing has improved tremendously over the past few days. Now is the time to book your trip! The fishing is great and it will only continue to get better!

Inshore: The redfish and black drum are STACKED UP on the docks of the ICW. Fresh shrimp and Berkley Gulp have been the top producers.

Be sure to check out our article in this month’s edition of North Carolina Sportsman on the Red Drum.

Near shore: The Bonito are thin at the Liberty Ship @ Wrightsville Beach. They are biting better at Divers Rock and are a fairly large class of Bonito. The Blue fish at the Liberty Ship have been on fire. We have caught many limits jigging the wreck in just a hour or two. There is also a fine opportunity for fly fisherman to hook into the blue fish. Have one person jig and when the other bluefish come up following the hooked one flip over a mylar clouser and hold on! Lots of fun on an 8wt. I Can’t wait to get them on the 6wt. The Gray Trout are also starting to show up and are nice sized fish.

We have a new video out that we just finished. It’s called Blue Fish Fun = Big Fish Fun.
It is one of my favorite ways to target big fish (king mackerel, amberjacks, cobia, sharks etc.) Just catching the blue fish is a lot of fun! View it by clicking here: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/2430630/7525797

The Beavertail page has been updated with a few new pic’s and the rigging should be done this week. Check it out: http://beavertailskiff.blogspot.com/

Reel Adventure Charters, Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report

Hello everyone. The Wrightsville Beach Fishing and Topsail Island Fishing Charters are doing well and we have had quite a few nice catches. The weather is better but still throwing us curve balls. This should end after today with the weather forecasted to hit the mid to upper 70’s. We are working with the weather and not against it and are just fishing for whatever is biting the best right now.

Inshore and near shore we are doing well around the docks in the ICW with the red and black drum. Fresh shrimp is the bait of choice fished on a carolina rig. Specked trout are biting well in the river and around Topsail. Berkley Gulp jerk baits and shrimp seem to be the top producers for the trout. Virginia mullet are still biting well at the mouth of the Cape Fear River on fresh shrimp in 17-25’ of water. The blue fish are on fire at the near shore wrecks and are biting anything that moves. Bonito……we have had some. The key word is SOME. We have not had a lot yet but a handful have been landed. So far the schools have been small. We are hoping these are the fore runners and not the huge pile that we are looking for. The next few days will tell.

With the weather warming and becoming more stable look for the fishing to heat up as well. The fishing is pretty good now and will be great in no time!

A word on my new flats boat… The Beavertail build is right on schedule and I expect to take delivery sometime next week. I have built a page for the Beavertail that shows the evolution of the build with pictures. It is pretty cool. Check it out @ http://www.beavertailskiff.blogspot.com/

Also for those that might not have seen it already check out our fly tying page packed full of pictures and how to videos. We have recently added a few new videos. It can be seen @ http://www.saltwaterflytying.blogspot.com/

We are booking up fast for the year! Now is the time to book your trip. Let’s go fishing!

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Charters 3-26-08 Report

Hello everyone. Our fishing charters out of Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island and Carolina Beach are doing great. Our main site www.reel-adventure.com continues to grow and we have added yet another page…. full of Fly Tying Videos. You can get to them from the Reel Adventure home page or at: www.saltwaterflytying.blogspot.com Check them out and keep an eye on the page as it will continue to grow with new fly patterns.

Boat news: My Mitzi Flats boat sold fast and the new Custom Beavertail B2 has been ordered. We are looking at a delivery date somewhere around mid April. I would love to get into the custom details but you will just have to wait and see. The redfish don’t even know what’s coming!

This season is off to a great start. This weekend it is going to be in the 80’s and it is reminding me of the Florida weather I was able to enjoy over the winter. We are doing well on the near shore wrecks with the Sharks, Tautog’s and other bottom dwelling species and we even caught a monster 4 lb ring tail!

Inshore: the redfish are biting well on Berkley Gulp on the warmer days in the shallow water, and they are also biting well in the ICW on dead shrimp fished on a carolina rig near the docks. They key this time of year is a slow presentation and patience. The blue fish bite is starting to pick up and the Spanish should not be far behind. We are excited about what this upcoming fishing season has in store for us!

We are starting to get busy with trips but still have lots of good dates open. Come enjoy the Wilmington weather and let’s catch some fish!

Reel Adventure Charters 11-14-07 Report and VIDEO!

Wow, this year has flown by! It seems like it was just March yesterday. It is already mid Novemeber and I am wrapping everything up here in NC and getting ready for 3 month’s in Florida. I would like to thank all my customers for yet another great year! I got to see a lot of my repeat customers this year, wich is always a blast, and met a lot of new faces as well. I cant thank you all enough, and I look forward to seeing lots of you again next year! I would also like to thank my sponsors: Berkley, Spiderwire, Abu Garcia, Minn Kota, Power Pole, and the gang at Salt Water Marine, and 601 Media for another great year. I could’nt have done it with out you!

Reel Adventure is no longer accepting trips in NC for the 2007 season. I am slammed with rod building, Thanksgiving, my anniversary (better not mess that up), and running the remaining charters I have on the schedule. This will be my last NC report for 2007. Please keep checking in for the Florida reports I will have up soon. They will be awesome!

ANNOUNCEMENT: Capt. Matt and Reel Adventure will be operating out of Pine Island Florida and the Everglades from November 29 to March 1. Please click here for more info: http://www.reel-adventure.com/PineIslandFishingCharters.htm This is an awesome packaged deal including: free airport pick up at Ft. Myers, (airfare is cheap right now!) very cheap lodging, with free phone and internet, and AWESOME fishing! This is my 4th year going down there, and will be my second year guiding down there. The fishing is truly amazing; you will see every fish before you cast! We hope to share this awesome fishery with you! (Call soon to get the dates you want! The end of February is already getting full!)

Click here for a slide show of last years Florida trip..This will show you a little of what you can expect down there!! Be sure to turn up your audio! Click here>>>>>>>>Florida VIDEO

Also please check out our new Wrightsville Beach Fishing Website by clicking here>>Wrightsville Beach Fishing

Ok, Now for the last NC report of 2007!

INSHORE: The flounder continue to bite well and look for that to keep on untill the water temp drops into the 50’s. They are biting well on the Berkley Gulp! 3 ” shrimp and jerkbaits. Our live bait has thinned out quite a bit due to the cooling water temps. The reds are starting to move on the flats, one day they are there the next day gone. Once it cools off and stays cool they should stay on the flats all winter long. The speckled trout have been hit or miss, but this should pick up as well.

OFFSHORE: The AJ’s are still at the 10 mile wrecks and even a stray cuda can be found there as well. I have’nt messed much with king mackerel and for some reason I did’nt target them much at all this year now that I think about it. The nearshore shark fishing and other nearshore fishing was just so good I never made the run for kings. They are one of my favorite species to target (note to self…kingfish more next year.) Speaking of nearshore fishing..our Albacore fishing is on fire down here right now! We hooked 15 last trip and on one trip we even got a 11 lb monster that tried to tear up my 10lb spinning gear! I though we would never stop it!

Well that’s it! What a year! Thanks again to everyone. I look foward to seeing you guys next year and hope to see some of you this winter down in Pine Island Florida or the Everglades. Just give us a call!

Keep a eye out for the Florida reports! They are going to be awesome!

Good fishing!

Wrightsville Beach fishing report 10-31-07

** Wrightsville Beach , Topsail Island , and Carolina Beach Fishing Report **
By: Captain Matt Wirt of Reel Adventure Charters

Now is the time to come fishing! We have plenty of open days available through Thanksgiving. The fishing has been great!

The fishing is truly amazing; you will see every fish before you cast! We hope to share this awesome fishery with you! (Call soon to get the dates you want! The end of February is already getting full!) Now back to NC waters…

INSHORE: The water is cooling off and the redfish are moving onto the flats and further up the shallow creeks. The trout bite is picking up around points, oyster bars and creek mouth’s where a lot of current is present. The flounder bite is really good. Try deep holes or ledges and don’t forget the inlets and near shore reefs. This pattern should be the same through Thanksgiving. The top producing baits have been Gulp! Gulp! and more Gulp! The shrimp and 5 inch jerkbaits are my favorite, color seems to have no effect right now.

OFFSHORE: The wind has been brutal the last few days but before the wind the Amberjacks were doing well at the wrecks and reefs 10-20 miles out… use the biggest bait you can find and HOLD ON! The cudas are everywhere and are a blast on light tackle. Try big topwater baits for best results. The spanish bite has picked back up and the Albacore are also right off the beach. The bluefish are everywhere right now and we have had a lot of fun sight casting to them on light tackle. The wind is supposed to subside in the next day or two and we cant wait!

We hope to see some of you for the great fall fishing NC has to offer and don’t forget The Florida fishing this winter. Get away from the cold and have a blast! Just give us a call!

The Amberjack (and other jack species) are doing well at the wrecks and reefs 10-20 miles out… use the biggest bait you can find and HOLD ON! The cudas are everywhere and are a blast on light tackle. The king mackerel bite is spread out, use live bait for best results and there are some big ones cruising the inlets. The spanish bite has picked back up. We sight casted to acres of them the other day and we hope this hangs on for a few more days. The bluefish are everywhere right now and we have had a lot of fun sight casting to them on light tackle. The albacore are about 7 miles off shore right now with a few stragglers making their way to the beach. The ones that are in large schools seem to be around 3-5 lb albacore and its hard to get them to bite even the smallest lure. They are here early and it looks like it might be a great fall to target them!

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report 9-27

**Wrightsville Beach Fishing Charters, Topsail Beach Fishing, Carolina Beach Fishing Charters. Report by Capt. Matt Wirt**

Hello everyone, sorry this report is so late…but when the report is late the fishing is GREAT! We have an excellent bite going right now and to say the great fall fishing is here would be an understatement. Now is the time to experience the best fishing North Carolina has to offer. Just give us a call!

INSHORE: The redfish, flounder and trout are all biting well and the water temp has cooled off quite a bit. The baitfish are everywhere and the fish are feeding heavily. We have also caught a few juvenile cobias inshore; they are always a neat surprise. We are mainly fishing with Berkley Gulp shrimp and jerk bait’s. I like the pearl white or new penny colors the best.

NEAR SHORE: It is awesome. We have huge bait balls of glass minnows everywhere and there are being crushed by Spanish Mackerel, Jacks, Large Needle Fish, Albacore, and Bluefish all at the same time. It is a sight to see. Yesterday the fish had the bait pushed right up on the beach. We put the boat in the surf zone and my customers caught fish for 6 hours non stop sight casting and limited out. It was some of the best fishing I have ever been a part of. Use extreme caution when chasing the fish on the beach and be ready to take a wave in the boat. Do not try it if it is rough. The albacore have showed up and are busting medium sized top water’s. The flounder bite is great just off the beach and we have had many double digit flounder days using live bait. The Gray Trout are doing well but the netters are wiping them out as fast as they can, but the trout action is still consistent. I could go on and on with this report. You just have to see the pics! And yes the sharks are still around….almost forgot about them!

OFFSHORE: Heck, I have no clue!! I can’t get away from the near shore stuff. Kings should be in the 10 mile areas along with some albacore and Spanish. The tower should be on fire with fish. Maybe one day I can force myself to break away and run out.

That’s it good luck! I will be leaving after Thanksgiving for Pine Island Florida and the Everglades for 3 months again this year. I ran a few charters down there last year in Pine Island and this year might try to run a few more. Stay tuned for details….It should be a deal you can’t refuse! It will include: airport pickup, lodging and fishing. All you have to do is show up! We will warm up on ladyfish and target, redfish, snook, trout, grouper, sheepshead, snapper, and many more.

We are pleased to announce that Reel Adventure is now sponsored by Minn Kota, the makers of the finest trolling motors available.

October and November offer the BEST fishing North Carolina has to offer. If you have been waiting……NOW IS THE TIME TO GO FISHING!

Also check out probably our best video yet! It is an awesome mixed bag video with lots of action! Be sure to turn up your audio! Click here>>>MIXED BAG VIDEO

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Charters 9-6-07 Reel Adventure Charters

Our fishing charter trips out of Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach have been doing well and we have been catching everything from red drum, flounder, sharks, amberjacks, black drum, bluefish, spanish, and king mackerel to name a few. We have also had some very nice catches of gray trout. They are here early and I hope it means we will have an early fall. The water temp is already dropping a little and the best fishing of the year is right around the corner. Now is the time to book your fall fishing trip!

INSHORE: The redfish and flounder are biting well on Berkley Gulp jerkbait’s and the 3 inch shrimp. I like the white or new penny colors for clear water and the rootbeer for the darker water. The speckled trout action has also been steady. Try a jerk bait or a popping cork with a Gulp shrimp under it for best results. Live bait is plentiful right now. Target the docks with live bait and don’t forget to tighten down the drag!

OFFSHORE: The offshore action has been off and on lately. The king mackerel are doing well, but we have not ran into any large ones yet and most of them are pretty far off the beach. Look for them to come closer in as the water cools just a bit more. There is tons of bait on the beach right now and we should have a GREAT fall king mackerel season. The spanish are still biting well on the beach and we are getting most of them sight casting to the schools. There are a lot of small ones mixed in so make sure you measure them. The shark action is still going strong and the amberjack’s are in the 20 mile range. I am still hearing of a few sail’s being caught but I have not been lucky enough to get a hook in one. The near shore wrecks and reefs are on fire with gray trout and flounder. Live finger mullet, stingsilver’s and Gulp seems to work the best. When fishing these near shore wrecks always put out a top line or a float rig with a big live bait on it. We picked up a nice king for an added bonus the other day doing this.

September, October, and November offer the BEST fishing North Carolina has to offer. If you have been waiting……NOW IS THE TIME TO GO FISHING!

Also Please go to our website to view this weeks fish pics and be sure to check out the NEW VIDEO “Mixed Bag Fishing”.

The Wrightsville Beach fishing, Topsail Island fishing, and Carolina Beach fishing has been great! We have had some real neat things happen this week. First we have a resident dolphin that we have named Jumper that has been hanging out with us while shark fishing. He will put on a great show, jumping over and over, 6’ in the air. He is fun to watch. Another neat thing was we were fighting a 35 lb Amberjack on king mackerel tackle 25 miles offshore, we saw this fish many times during the 30 minute fight and all of a sudden it had a big red spot on the side of it. My customer hastily got it to the boat, I gaffed it and about a 300 lb 10’ long bull shark came up looking for more to eat. The shark was awesome to see. Wait till you see the AJ pic below! We were lucky to get that one in! We are catching lots of sharks right now and sometimes they are so thick you can walk on them it seems, we even saw one biting a floating beer can. Now that’s one shark with a serious problem! And for the first time ever, there was a marriage proposal by one of my customers aboard one of our trips. We wish them the best and she better like fishing!

Inshore: The redfish and flounder continue to be the top producers and a few speckled trout are still around. We are catching everything on Berkley Gulp and/or live bait. Our bait fish are everywhere right now and the redfish are feeding heavily and are very active due to the warm water temps and bait. You almost have to put it right on their nose to get them to bite at times. They have no shortage of food this time of the year so you must make your bait stand of from the others to draw a strike. If the reds are feeding on mullet try a Gulp! Shrimp and if they are busting on shrimp (you will see the shrimp popping on the surface) throw a Gulp! Jerk bait or a Johnson gold spoon. This combination has been paying off. The fish are everywhere right now…..flats, creeks, docks, river, ICW….everywhere. They are not jumping in the boat, but if you work hard at it you should get a few.

Offshore: The shark action has been exceptional. We have had many sharks over 30lbs, lots in the 50lb range, and we had LOTS go over 100lbs. My repeat customer’s come this time of year to shark fish and the action has been great! So great in fact, that I already have days booked for this time next year! This is some of the best action one could ask for and it is rare to go 10 minutes without a bite. We are using 40-50lb stand up tackle with 80 lb spider wire and 135lb main wire to fight these fish. This is still light tackle!!!! Be very careful sight casting to these sharks. Last year they all seemed to run away from the nets when hooked up. This year it seems they are all running for them. The shrimper’s don’t like hooks in the nets. It can damage their gear or pinch the net reducing their catch or worse. Be careful and respectful when fishing behind the shrimp boats. The Spanish have thinned out a bit but are still around. Try early morning for best results, you might luck up and find a 1 acre pod like we did a few days ago. The Kings are close by and I mean close! Try the inlets for best results and this is where you will also find the larger Kings. I refuse to run more then 10 miles out this time of year for snake kings. There are plenty in the 7 to 10 mile range and this cuts down on your ride time and maximizes your fishing time. The Amberjack fishing is still going strong but they have moved further offshore to cooler water . If you are ready to hunt some redfish or catch LARGE sharks give me a call. I will guarantee the sharks but getting them to the boat is your job!

Be sure to check out our new website @ http://www.topsailislandfishingcharters.com/ it is still under construction with lots more to come.

Carolina Beach Fishing Report 8-10-07 Reel Adventure Charters

The Wrightsville Beach fishing, Topsail Island fishing, and Carolina Beach fishing has been phenomenal to say the least!

INSHORE: The flounder bite is really good. Try deep holes or ledges and don’t forget the inlets and near shore reefs. The red drum bite is there but the water is hot and you really have to coax them into biting. Try early morning or late afternoon for best results.

OFFSHORE: The shark fishing continues to put lots of smiles on my customer’s faces and many of these sharks are over 100 lbs. The Amberjack (and other jack species) are doing well at the wrecks and reefs 10-20 miles out… use the biggest bait you can find and HOLD ON! The cudas are everywhere and are a blast on light tackle. The king mackerel bite is spread out, use live bait for best results and there are some big ones crusing the inlets. The spanish bite has picked back up. We sight casted to acres of them the other day and we hope this hangs on for a few more days.

Be sure to check us out in this month’s edition of the North Carolina Sportsman Magazine with our featured Shark fishing article and don’t forget to watch us on the Coastal Carolina Fishing Report TV show with our Cape Fear Report. We will tell you what’s hot and what’s not!

That’s it for now. This is a short report, I will let the pic’s speak for themselves. This fishing for a living is hard work but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report 7-20-07 Reel Adventure

Our charter fishing trips out of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach N.C. are doing great, and are producing a nice amount of fish. Sight cast to sharks or redfish its up to you! Great catches this week: 6.6 lb Spanish, 7.4 lb Spanish and 4 sharks over 100lbs! Also check out our Shark article in the North Carolina Sportsman Magazine. It should be in the news stands today!

Inshore: The redfish and flounder continue to be the top producers. We are catching everything on Berkley Gulp! The redfish are feeding heavily and are very active due to the warm water temps. This combination has been paying off nicely when matching the hatch and the bait they are chasing does not. The fish are everywhere right now…..flats, creeks, docks, river, ICW….everywhere. They are not jumping in the boat, but if you work hard at it you should get a few.

Offshore: The shark action has been exceptional. We have had many sharks over 30lbs, lots in the 50lb range, and we had one go over 100lbs and was weighed in on certified scales. My customer stated he wanted a few shark steaks… well he got them! I refuse to run more then 10 miles out this time of year for snake kings. There are plenty in the 7 to 10 mile range and this cuts down on your ride time and maximizes your fishing time. The Amberjack fishing is still going strong.

If you are ready to hunt some redfish or catch LARGE sharks give me a call. I will guarantee the sharks but getting them to the boat is your job!

Wrightsville Beach Fishing 6-30 report. Reel Adventure Charters

Our fishing charter trips out of Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach have been doing well and we have been catching everything from upper slot red drum, HUGE amberjacks, mahi, black drum, bluefish, and spanish and king mackerel to name a few. The weather has been fantastic and the fishing has been great right along with it.

INSHORE: The redfish and flounder are biting well on Berkley Gulp jerkbaits and the 3 inch shrimp. I like the white or new penny colors for clear water and the rootbeer for the darker water. The speckled trout action has also been steady, try a jerk bait or a popping cork with a gulp shrimp under it for best results.

OFFSHORE: The offshore action has been on fire lately. The king mackerel are doing awesome but we have not ran into any large ones yet. Speaking of large…..we boated a huge 72 pound amberjack last week on a 3 pound bluefish and broke off 3 more that were probably close to 100 pounds that we could not stop! Check below for the new amberjack video to see the 72 pounder being caught by my customers. The mahi action is also doing well. On the same trip when the 72 pound AJ was caught I also free gaffed a 15 pound mahi that would not eat anything but live UN-HOOKED menhaden. Well needless to say he got too close to the boat and ended up in the cooler. The Spanish are still biting well on the beach and we are getting most of them sight casting to the schools.

Check out our new Amberjack VIDEO and be sure to turn up your audio. Click here>>> AMBERJACK VIDEO or go to the video page on our website.

Wrightsville Beach Fishing 6-13-07 Reel Adventure Charters

The Wrightsville Beach Fishing and Carolina Beach Fishing action has been steady over the past two weeks. That is the main reason why these reports are getting further and further apart. When the fishing is good, the harder it is to stay on top of these reports! We have LOTS of pic’s and 2 new VIDEOS we just produced and we hope you enjoy watching them as much as we did making them! Now for the fishing report…..
INSHORE:
The flounder bite is picking up! They are biting in shallow water, deep water, ledges….everywhere. The preferred bait has been either live bait or Berkley Gulp! The redfish are stacked up and are working the docks and structure on the ICW, and the Wrightsville Beach docks seem to be producing the best. The flats are producing well when the wind allows and we had 2 of the best sight casting days that I can remember with lots of redfish caught and released. The flats are very non wind dependent and if the conditions are windy we simply fish the creeks or other nearby structure that is out of the wind. We produced a nice inshore slam under these conditions a few days back. The Bluefish are still around and have been snapping off a few carolina rigs every now and again.
OFFSHORE:
The Spanish are near the beach and are scattered one minute and schooled tight the next. Look for bait suspended in the water column (be sure to pull a planer through it!) or for fish breaking the surface. Always keep a light casting rod ready with 10lb test to sight cast to the Spanish. The tide lines near the inlets have been producing nice Spanish and are a good place to begin your search. The King Mackerel have finally taken up residence in the usual spots that are 5-10 miles off of the beach. We picked up a nice 12lb King Mackerel just off of the Blockade Runner 3 days ago. If the wrecks and AR’s are full of boats venture off to a near by ledge for best results. Live bait has been doing well but the dead cigars have been catching the majority of the fish. The Cobia bite is going strong and the Amberjacks are stacked up on the offshore AR’s. Try live menhaden for best results.

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report 5-23-07 Reel Adventure

The fishing is really heating up! Our Wrightsville Beach fishing and Carolina Beach fishing trips are doing well now that the wind has subsided. Let’s hope it stays that way!

Inshore: We have some nice redfish action going on right now. Try Gulp! or cut bait if you can’t find any live bait. (There is plenty of bait in the dredge pond.) The flounder bite is picking up a bit and there have been quite a few bluefish to play with near the inlets. These guys are a blast to sight cast to with a fly rod or light spinning gear. I expect the inshore fishing to EXPLODE when we get out first run of finger mullet.

Offshore: Right off the beach the Spanish Mackerel have been doing well. The wind has the Spanish bite messed up pretty bad but it is getting back to normal now. We have caught a lot of them sight casting, and trolling with Clark spoons. There are also a few Bonito still around but you better be quick on the cast! Further off shore there are LOT’s of spadefish at the Dredge Wreck along with some nice Spanish and small Kings. At the School house there are also some Kings with some Amberjacks mixed in. WR-4 is producing some nice Kings and Dolphin and the Kings have been a little larger at WR-4.

Check out this week’s pic’s at http://reel-adventure.com/blog/

Good luck, and I hope everyone has a safe and happy Memorial Day!

Reel Adventure Report 4-30 Wrightsville Beach Fishing Charters

Hello everyone. This week has been awesome. Our Carolina Beach Fishing Charters and Wrightsville Beach Fishing Charters have been doing awesome and the season is now in FULL SWING! Now is the time to come fishing!

Near Shore: We are catching lot’s of Atlantic Bonito and the Spanish Mackerel have also showed up and they are big and feeding heavily! My customers have had a great time chasing these guys around and sight casting to them. Please check out our new Bonito Video @ http://www.reel-adventure.com/videos.htm it is another awesome video.

Inshore: We have been doing well with the Speckled Trout and Red Drum and have also had a few Flounder. We are catching live bait now and this action will continue to pick up as the year goes on.

Off Shore: The King Mackerel are at the school house, WR4 and the 23 mile rock and will continue to move in closer. We have had 66-70 degree water right off the beach and the Kings will continue to move closer in with the warmer water.

What you can expect this week: LOTS of Spanish Mackerel slow trolling and sight casting along with more Bonito. The inshore fishing will continue to improve with the warmer water and live bait moving around. The Kings will be closer and closer and will be right off the beach in the next week or two.

This report is a bit shorter than usual…I will let the pics speak for them selves! This is not even half of them!

Again don’t forget the Bonito video @ http://www.reel-adventure.com/videos.htm

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report 4-15-07 Reel Adventure Charters

Hello everyone. Please check out our new sites: www.wrightsvillebeachfishing.net and www.carolinabeachfishing.net, they were just updated with a new design and will soon be packed full of video’s and how to’s etc, just like our main site www.reel-adventure.com. Lots of other good news is hopefully on the way. It is quite possible we will be adding a brand new 25 ft bay boat to the current fleet. A few things still have to be lined up with the deal but this boat will give us some added range along with a super dry ride and a bit more fishing room. Stay tuned! We are also entering the fly fishing arena this year and I am very excited about it. I built an awesome G Loomis 12 weight rod and mated it up with a Tibor Billy Pate marlin reel to target 100 lb sharks, AJ’s, Dolphin, King Mackerel and Barracuda. Also in the lineup is a G Loomis 8 weight that I built and mated it up with another Tibor reel, the Billy Pate bonefish reel in an awesome red finish. I was lucky to get this reel as there were only about 20 produced worldwide. These fly rods are available for customer use.

Now for the fishing report.

Offshore: Things are heating up. The kings are still far out but are moving in closer and closer each day with the warming water temps. The Bonito have made a poor showing so far but all is not lost with these tasty fish. We still have a chance at a good run of them, we will just have to wait and see. The Bluefish have taken up residence at the near shore wrecks and are very aggressive. One of my last trips my customer stated he loved Bluefish and his party was promptly sent home with a limit of 60 Bluefish in a half day trip. Jigging these wrecks should produce lots of fun for the next few weeks. The water needs to warm up just a bit more and then the Spanish should be here. We are waiting and ready to go! I can’t wait to see a Spanish on the other end of that 8 wt fly rod!

Inshore: This week we caught and released out first Flounder which is always a good sign. We are doing well with the red drum and have caught many in the upper slot range and a few over the slot fish that we tagged and released. Most of these fish are fresh in from the ocean and are hungry! The Speckled Trout bite has slowed a bit. There are lots of them around, they just seem to be scattered out now. Our live bait situation should improve dramatically in the next week. No finger mullet yet, but we do have Menhaden inshore. They are down in the water column. We caught quite a few bluefish yesterday inshore on Gulp! and these Bluefish will soon drive the Menhaden to the surface where we can get them with a cast net. The small sand sharks are just coming off of spawn and these guys are a lot of fun on light tackle. Check out the pics at my website: www.reel-adventure.com/blog for the female we caught and the male was still holding on to her. We reached down and grabbed both of them and only one was hooked! This was a first for me and gave us all a big laugh!

The fishing is great, just target what is biting and have fun!

Carolina Beach Fishing Report 4-1-07 Reel Adventure Charters

Hello everyone. The season is really heating up and so is the fishing. Our charter trips out of Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach have been doing well and we have been catching everything from upper slot red drum, many 3 pound speckled trout, gray trout, tautog, black drum, bluefish, and sharks just to name a few. The weather has been fantastic and the fishing has been great right along with it.

Inshore: The water temps have been ranging from 60 in the ICW to 66 degrees on the flats back in the bay. The red drum seem to be out of their winter pattern and are feeding heavily with the warmer water. Dead low tide on warm sunny days provides the best results. We are catching them with Gulp shrimp and jerk baits. There are many new reds coming in fresh off the ocean with sea lice attached to them and they are foraging around for food. These guys are aggressive and willing to take a hook! Dock fishing in the ICW has offered up some nice slot size redfish as well as some very nice speckled trout. These trout are large which tells me lots of them weathered the winter and we should have a banner year with the trout.

Off shore: The water is in the 60 to 62 degree range from the beach out to 12 miles. We are starting to get some nice bluefish and gray trout on the near shore wrecks along with some nice tautog and black drum which are both great eating. I have seen numerous boils on the surface (in the 7 mile range) but they have been scattered out to much to find out what it is. It is either Bonito or False Albacore but again they have been too scattered to get a hook in one. Lots of birds are also working the bait. Speaking of bait, the wrecks are loaded with baitfish. As soon as the water temp rises the Spanish and kings will be in to snack on them. I can’t wait!

As you can tell the fishing has been great, this time of year you just have to target what is biting and as long as the rod is bent I am happy! Be sure to check out our websites @ www.wrightsvillebeachfishing.net and www.carolinabeachfishing.net soon for some new updated videos. And if you haven’t been to our main site lately www.reel-adventure.com there are lots of videos up right now. Check them out!

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report 3-21-07 Reel Adventure Charters

Hello everyone. Our fishing charters out of Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island and Carolina Beach are doing great. Our new websites www.carolinabeachfishing.net and www.wrightsvillebeachfishing.net are having a great response with our customers and we thank you for checking them out. Our main site www.reel-adventure.com continues to grow and we have added yet another cool video “Topwater Speckled Trout Fishing” which is really cool to watch. Check it out!

This season is off to a great start and we sure have had some great weather. This weekend it is going to be in the 80’s and it is reminding me of the Florida weather I was able to enjoy over the winter. We are doing well on the near shore wrecks with the Sharks, Tautog’s and other bottom dwelling species and we even caught a monster 4 lb ring tail!
Inshore the redfish are biting well on Berkley Gulp! on the warmer days in the shallow water, and they are also biting well in the ICW on dead shrimp fished on a carolina rig. They key this time of year is a slow presentation and patience. The blue fish bite is starting to pick up and the Spanish should not be far behind. We are excited about what this upcoming fishing season has in store for us!

We have also been busy building rods for customers and for the business as well. Each year I continue to get more and more custom with these rods and at this point the “Custom aspect” is getting hard to top. You will be amazed at our new inshore redfish and trout rods that we have mated up with Abu Garcia’s new 804 spinning reel. These reels are giving the Stradic’s and Okuma VS series reels a run for their money and after fishing hard in the Everglades all winter with the new Garcia’s I think they are better than both and are also a few dollars cheaper.

We are starting to get busy with trips but still have lots of good dates open. Come enjoy the Wilmington weather and let’s catch some fish!

Reel Adventure Charters 3/4/07 Carolina Beach REDFISH!

Reel Adventure Charters NORTH CAROLINA REPORT!!

We have been back from Florida for a week now and our charters out of Wrightsville and Carolina Beach have been doing well. We are still hit and miss on the redfish but that is winter fishing. The red drum bite is getting more and more consistent with the warm weather and we got 8 small redfish in about a ½ hour today fishing docks in the ICW. Dead shrimp on a carolina rig has been producing the best but we did get one to take a Berkley Gulp! shrimp. The water temp has been between 56 and 61 and with this temp so warm so early in the year it is shaping up to be a GREAT year for fishing. I am expecting to see the water temp around 65 tomorrow on the flats. I have not ran across the trout again yet, but they should be near the creeks and creek mouths and I hope to find a few tomorrow. The next calm day we get I am going to do some scouting around offshore between Carolina Beach and Frying Pan tower for Kings and Albacore. The weather is heating up and so is the fishing. Give us a call! We are ready to bend a few rods!
